Exeter Harriers’ young multi-eventers Anya Turner and Sam Talbot produced some outstanding performances at the National Indoor Combined Events Championships in Sheffield, with several personal best performances between them. Both have moved up to the U17 age group, always a tough challenge as they will be more than a year younger than some of their competitors. Turner, competing in the one-day pentathlon, set her standards high from the outset, with new personal best performances in the 60m hurdles and the high jump. A solid shot put followed by a below par long jump knocked her points score back but Turner still placed thirteenth overall after the 800 with a points score of 2944, an improvement on her previous pentathlon best by 88 points. Talbot, with seven events to contend with over two days, also started his campaign in style with a new best in the 60m followed by a welcome return to form in the long jump. The start of day 2 was replicated with new lifetime bests in the 60m hurdles and the pole vault, ending with the 1000m and a points score of 4300 to place eighth overall.
