Exeter Harriers made the trip to Westward Ho!, North Devon on Sunday to compete in the fourth of the Westward Cross Country League. With the fixture in doubt earlier in the week due to high tides, credit has to go to the organisers Bideford AC for preparing a course still suitable for racing.
The best team performance came from the under 17 men who packed well to finish as first team on the day. Patrick Livingstone has his best run of the winter season to finish 3rd in 20.52 with the in form Matthew Dowell 4th in 20.58. Shaun Johnson completed the trio in 6th place in 21.14. In the under 15s boys race Ferlix Sethi was the sole representative and finished and encouraging 6th in 15.39.
Sam Pyne had one of his best ever runs for the club in finishing in 2nd place in the under 13 boys race in 12.12, just 4 seconds behind the winner.
In the under 11 development race Cameron Bryrson finished as the 3rd boy in 7.02 with B Caldwell also making the podium in the girls racing in 3rd place in 7.24.
Pheobe Killen was the first Harrier home in the under 15 girls race in 17.53, with Lauren Coleman 8th in 18.54 and Josie Crosby 9th in 19.09. Meanwhile in the under 13 girls race Runa Manby finished 13th in 15.12 with Sophie Burden not far behind in 14th place in 15.36.
A small number of senior men made the trip with Adam Stobbs leading the team home in 50th place in 36.50. Peter Chamberlain was next home in 57th in 38.39 with Alan Cattell 85th in 44.36.
There were some encouraging performances from the juniors at the event and hopefully a larger number will turn out at the next fixture on Sunday 9th February at Bovey Tracey.
Meanwhile in Dawlish, Simon Minting was taking on the Oh My Obelisk! 11.5 mile race. The race involved 5.5 miles of pretty much running up hill (all off road) and then a nice downhill stretch on tired legs back down to the finish. He did well to finish an encouraging 3rd place in 1.17.03.
