Exeter Harriers hosted its first DSActive Festival of Athletics on Sunday 23rd September. The day got off to a wet and blustery start but blue skies appeared by the time the young athletes, supported by Exeter Harriers’ Game Changers, were set to compete.
The DS Active competition, for athletes with Down’s Syndrome, formed part of the Exeter Harriers Combined Events, with athletes from all over the UK taking part. The format for the DS Festival required the competitors to complete a; 60m sprint, vortex throw, standing long jump and 200m. Whilst the group has been training together since June, with coaching support from the Game Changers, this was the first time they had competed in a multi-event. With the Game Changers on hand, to guide and support and even take photographs, all athletes completed the challenge and were awarded medals and certificates.
The group, initially supported by England Athletics satellite club funding, train regularly on a Thursday evening. If you’re interested in finding out more visit the DS Active page on our website.
Exeter Harriers was also lucky to be awarded funding via the England Athletics Game Changers Programme. This has enabled the club to recruit young volunteers and provide them with the training and skills to support the DS Active group.
