TOUGH OPENER AS TALBOT TAKES SILVER AT REGIONAL INDOORS
Sam Talbot’s first competition of the year, the South of England Indoor Pentathlon at Lee Valley, proved to be a difficult one for the young Exeter Harrier. Now competing as an U17, the 14 year old finds himself up against athletes more than a year older than himself, and he has done well to again reach a podium position in a major regional competition.
On a day when Talbot’s track events went well but his field events fell short, his specialist event saw him run a superb 60m hurdles race to finish first in a new lifetime best time of 8.32. A below-par long jump of 5.67 followed by 10.71 in the shot putt saw Talbot still maintain an overall lead, but a difficult high jump with a best clearance of just 1.57, some 22cm down on his best, meant he slipped to third overall with just the 1000m to go.
A new lifetime best in this final event of 3.03.33 enabled Talbot to take the silver medal.
Final standings: 1st JJ Crookes 3094, 2nd S Talbot 3020, 3rd E Ajanni 2853
