Exeter Harriers veterans section is thriving as athletes produced tremendous results at the South West Vets Championships at Exeter Arena. On the track Jevgeni Judin smashed the M35 400 championship record to claim gold with a great run in 52.23, whilst in the throws Mike BourcierMayo pushed the M70 discus record out to 36.99, adding over 3 metres to the old record on his way to gold, and George Eccles succeeded in adding over 10 metres to the M75 javelin record with a superb best throw of 30.21. Bourcier-Mayo also won further gold in the shot with 9.50 and silver in the hammer with 28.04. All three athletes combine their own training with coaching at the club, Judin assisting with the Junior sessions, Bourcier-Mayo with the young throwers, and Eccles is Harriers’ Head Coach and one of the top javelin coaches in the country.
Also on the track Catherine Harman won the W45 800 in 2:47.3 and Clare Frank also took gold in the W50 200 in 30.5 and claimed silver in the 100 in 15.12.
James Scarth claimed double gold with excellent runs in the M40 400 and 800 in 55.55 and 2:08.00 respectively. Rob Grew won the M50 200 in 26.17, also finishing fourth in the 100 in 12.91, with Mark Turner fifth in 13.06 and Bob Crowter sixth in 13.84. Crowter also claimed fourth in the 200 in 28.91 and took silver in the shot with 7.70. Jim Mawles also had a great day with golds in the M45 discus in 36.99 and shot with 11.16, and Derek Mardles continues to run well with a win in the M65 200 in 30.5 and taking silver in the 100 in 15.12.
